Audit On Current State of
Diversion Mitigation Program

Rxpert Solutions’ diversion mitigation program provides consultative services to assist healthcare facilities with mitigating the risks inherent in diversion of controlled substances. The program is comprehensive and designed to be a consultative partnership.

Our audit is comprehensive in scope and our team includes experts who have experience as physicians, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, nurses, healthcare administrators, and law enforcement. Some team members are healthcare professionals who were former drug diverters, hence aware of where blind spots may exist.  Others are actively involved in treatment facilities, working with hundreds of addicted professionals a year.

We will work with you to address three main areas which are meant to form the foundation of a structured, ongoing program:

  • Risk Mitigation and Education
  • Early Identification and Response
  • Compassionate Intervention

Using these three areas as a foundation, the Rxpert Solutions’ team will perform a comprehensive analysis of the facility’s policies and procedures, culture, climate of accountability and current practices. The goal is to create sustainable change that positively affects the health and well-being of the facility, its employees and the patients they serve.

A key component to prevention is education. Understanding the culture of the institution and staff’s perception of diversion is important. Assessing that culture is part of Rxpert Solutions’ audit. The results will give leadership insight into what education may be needed to promote a change in culture. We can partner with you in that ongoing education.

It is crucial that incidents of impairment and diversion are identified as quickly as possible to minimize risk to the facility, staff, and patient. To this end, a thorough on-site review of current processes will be done to identify areas of risk. Policies and procedures will be reviewed, with the goal of improving a system-wide culture of controlled substance accountability, addressing steps to take in the event of suspected diversion, increased comfort with reporting a colleague, and self-reporting. Workflow observation is an essential component to understanding where gaps may exist. Poor practice and diversion can often look alike. Observation will bring poor practices to the surface and highlight where work is needed to bring staff into compliance.

The most dangerous time for the staff member with a substance use disorder is at the time of confrontation and after the employee is removed from the facility. Special attention needs to be focused on this area and our team will partner with the facility to provide appropriate and compassionate intervention techniques.

Ongoing education, culture change, risk mitigation and consistent monitoring are the hallmarks of addressing the substance use disorder epidemic impacting healthcare professionals. Rxpert Solutions is the standard for institutions who desire to be leaders in addressing this significant issue.
