The Birth of Drug Diversion Detection Automation- Part 1

The time has arrived! Healthcare now has excellent options in the arena of drug diversion monitoring software solutions. For the healthcare providers who are seasoned in manual controlled substance drug diversion monitoring, we can take our skills to a whole new level with the help of diversion detection software. Speaking from experience, it is not uncommon to spend hours on a single investigation when a co-worker expresses concern or a preliminary audit reveals you may have a diversion case. No more waiting years for someone new to diversion detection to develop a “gut” for diversion detection. No more need to dedicate a full time staff member to monthly audits. No more need to make time to spot check all new Registry or Traveler staff. The diversion software will do all of this for you!

One of these solutions may be more comprehensive than others. One may be more economical than others. One may be more user friendly than others. As a busy pharmacy leader, it is hard to find the time to evaluate each product extensively, and once we let them in the door to provide a demo, it can turn into a lengthy product review and sales pitch.

Based on my research thus far, there are six solutions available for purchase -Omnicell and Pyxis have their own solutions. Depending on what automated dispensing machine (ADM) you currently contract with, one of these might be an option. Aside from Omnicell and Pyxis, and independent of your ADM vendor, are the solutions offered by HelioMetrics, Invistics, Kit Check, and Protenus.

I am excited about what I have learned so far.  My goal is to provide you with an overview of the solutions. I will share feedback from current customers. I will compare features the various solutions offer. This will be an unbiased review of what is currently available and will hopefully jump start your decision making process.

Technology, through automation and artificial intelligence, is definitely one of the most disruptive sources. –Alain Dehaze
